Presentation Project

You will have four options for completing this project. Choose the scenario that interests you most.

Scenario #1

You are a meteorologist working behind the scenes. Construct and present a weather forecast predicting a storm system that is expected to produce tornadoes. Examine regional charts, weather patterns and conditions and then put together a "weather warning" describing when and where a tornado may strike, the potential strength, size and path and the weather conditions supporting the storm system. Support your position and include safety tips for people that may be caught in the area at the onset of the tornado.

Scenario # 2

You have just survived a tornado in your neighborhood and are being interviewed on the local news. Explain what you saw as the system approached and what it was like to "ride out the storm."Discuss the best course of action for survival and the resulting damage from the funnel. Rate the tornado using the Fajita scale and identify in terms of damage why you think it fits that catagory.

Scenario #3

You are the tornado chaser. You have just been called in for the chase. Create an "on the scene" weather report to present to the class. Identify what you are looking for and explain associated phenomena such as horizontal rain. Describe what the weather conditions are that are producing the funnel. How does it feel to be so close? What are the most likely dangers? Identify where you are in proximity to the tornado and speculate on its probable path and duration.

Scenario #4

Construct a tornado simulator to present to the class. Be able to explain the similarities and differences in the simulated tornado, and a real one, discussing weather patterns and associated phenomena.

Notice the sky in each of the pictures on this page. What is the one thing they all have in common? Imagine that you have been called to the chase, what conditions are you looking for? What are some of the weather characteristics and associated phenomena that will help you to identify when you are closing in on the target? Where should a tornado chaser position themselves in relation to the funnel?
